Alligator Septic's Guide to Septic Tank Cleaning in Miami, Florida
How does a septic system work
Now, let's start with the basics. How does a septic system even work? It's actually pretty simple. When you flush the toilet or run water down the drain, it all goes into a big underground tank buried on your property. Over time, the solids settle to the bottom and the liquids float to the top. Bacteria in the tank break down the solids and turn them into sludge, which eventually needs to be pumped out by a professional septic tank cleaning company.
Signs That Your Septic Needs Cleaning
When you flush your toilet sewage backups up into the shower, toilet gurgle noises, and odors are all signs it’s time to call in the pump truck. Neglecting to clean your septic tank can lead to serious problems down the line, like clogs, backups, and even costly damage to your property.
Importance of Regular Pumping
The frequency of cleaning depends on a few factors, like the size of your tank and the number of people using your system. Typically a proper pumping and pressure washing of every 2 years will keep your system functional for many years. Every time I open up a tank I stick a shovel in to check the sludge level. If there is too much build up we recommend cleaning more frequently.
The Septic Tank Cleaning Process
We will arrive to your home in a large pump truck.
If your tank doesn’t have access covers to the surface we start probing the ground for the lids. We can find most septic tanks within 5 minutes using the probe. If it takes any longer there is usually an issue with the tank being too deep, under a tree, concrete, or pavers. If we can’t locate the tank with a probe we use and camera and locator to pinpoint the exact location.
Once the tank is found we then expose the lid and open it.
The First thing we do when the tank is open is check the liquid level, check the sludge layer, and overall condition of the tank.
We run the vacuum hose and pressure washer hose from the truck to the tank and start pumping.
We use the pressure washer to break up any sludge, sand or debris in the tank as we are vacuuming.
After we get all the sludge out and get the tank to the concrete bottom we look for any structural problems in the tank.
Once the cleaning is complete we seal the lid and backfill the hole if necessary.
The process takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.
Dispelling Common Myths About Keeping Septic Tanks Clean
It's not necessary to add yeast, sugar, or any other weird concoctions to your system. And flushing a dead fish down the toilet won't magically clean your tank.
The Myth List
Septic tanks never have to be cleaned.
False septic tanks need to be cleaned every couple of years to eliminate sludge build up. Sludge gets trapped in the tank, water runs out to the drain field. When sludge builds up too much it clogs your drain field.
My tank is not full.
False septic tanks operate at capacity. Septic tanks are not storage tanks their only function is to separate solid waste from liquid waste. The pipe from your house is about 2 inches higher than the overflow pipe to the drain field. After a pumping tanks will fill back up to the drain field pipe within 2 weeks.
I use additives I don’t have to pump my tank.
False additives do not digest the solids or make them disappear. Normal bacteria in the tank will make the sludge settle to the tank bottom. Use and overuse of additives blend the sludge into a mixture in the tank and destroy the drain field. Additives cause suspended solids in the water running out to the drain field do not use them.
Remember, regular maintenance is key to keeping your system running smoothly and avoiding costly repairs down the line. Thanks for tuning in, and we'll see you next time at your next septic service.

Septic Tank Pumping & Repairs
Septic Pumping Done Right
When you need to clean your septic tank, septic pumping may not be enough to remove all the sludge and debris that has built up over time. At Alligator, we recommend pumping the tank and using pressure washing to get rid of any remaining sludge or debris. While we pump, we add high-pressure water to stir up the sludge and debris so that the vacuum can suck it up into the truck. This ensures that your septic tank is thoroughly cleaned and in good condition.
Cleaning your septic tank regularly has 2 main benefits.
It can help extend the life of your drain field by removing sludge buildup inside the tank every few years. This allows the drain field to drain clear, treated liquid for a longer time, making it last longer.
By pumping and cleaning septic tanks regularly, you can also extend the life of the tank itself. Sludge can build up in the tank over time and damage the concrete bottom. However, by removing the sludge every few years, you can reduce this damage and keep the tank in good working order for a longer time. Regular septic tank pumping and cleaning is a wise investment in the health and longevity of your septic system.
